Sometimes patients with sensitive skin curtail their skincare regimen because they believe that will help them avoid dryness, flakiness, redness, itchiness. and breakouts. Keeping sensitive skin in optimal shape, however, requires proper cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing, and sun protection.
At Cosmetic Laser Dermatology in San Diego, our team has been involved in researching and even developing skin care products for patients of all ages with sensitive, delicate, dry skin and skin irritation problems. We will work with you to create a customized routine that addresses your key skin problem areas – whether irritation, acne or aging – all the while ensuring that you look and feel healthy, youthful, clear, and comfortable. We also offer cosmetics that are compatible with delicate skin and also block the sun’s UVA and UVB rays. Call us at (858) 943-2113 or contact us online for more about sensitive skin treatments.
At Cosmetic Laser Dermatology, we also offer very low-concentration acid or enzymatic peels that gently remove the dulling outermost layer of your skin without stripping it of its healthy protective qualities. These “lunchtime peels” can be done as often as once a month, require no downtime, and leave you looking luminous and youthful.
Moisturizers are Protectors
Just as the epidermis and skin oils protect your skin from bacteria and environmental stressors, a moisturizer formulated for sensitive skin will act as an added barrier. A good sensitive skin moisturizer will also lock in moisture, preventing your skin from drying out.
Even though you may have oily skin or acne, you still need to moisturize twice a day after cleansing to keep your face and body optimally healthy. We recommend products that are nonirritating and fragrance-free. If you have acne, we may guide you toward an oil-free moisturizer as part of your acne treatment.
After cleansing, lightly pat your face semi-dry, leaving a thin layer of moisture that your moisturizer can then “lock” into place. If you live in a dry climate or use air conditioning and/or central heating in your home, you may also want to get a humidifier.
Create “Shade” From the Sun
Past generations protected their skin from the sun’s rays with long sleeves, long skirts, hats, and parasols. Few of us these days would want to use so much protective clothing. However, it is important to guard your delicate skin from skin cancer, sunburns, and tanning caused by the harsh rays of the sun – without exposing it to potentially harsher chemical sun blocks.
Sunscreens that rely on physical, rather than chemical, blockers, such as zinc oxide and titanium oxide, are the best option for people with sensitive skin. If your skin is prone to acne, we will recommend a formulation that is also noncomedogenic. Your sunblock can be applied after your moisturizer.

Another layer of protection can be created by the makeup you wear. Mineral-based foundations, powders, and blushes form a physical barrier to the sun’s damaging rays. (Read more here: https://clderm.com/best-selling-skincare-products/)
Sensitive skin may also be prone to other problems, such as acne and rosacea. Your dermatologist will work with you to design treatment for sensitive skin to control outbreaks and provide irritation relief.
