Men's Skin Overview
In general, men’s skin is somewhat different than women’s skin, so what is effective for women is not always effective for men, at least, not without modifications.
Men’s skin is naturally thicker and has more collagen and elastic fibers than a woman’s; therefore, it ages more slowly. However, men are more susceptible to sun damage. The reason for this is partly due to the lack of sunscreen and makeup used by men as compared to women. For example, men develop fine lines and wrinkles more readily and are nearly 50 percent more likely to develop all forms of skin cancer, especially the more severe form of skin cancer: melanoma.
Accordingly, a skincare plan for men must meet his unique needs, especially if the goal is simply to look younger and more virile.
Male Skin Concerns
At Cosmetic Laser Dermatology, we design procedures and treatments just for men that provide youthful and natural-looking results.
Laser Treatment for Skin
Laser treatments are popular for addressing various male skin issues:
- Correcting superficial lines and wrinkles
- Reducing scars (acne, injury, surgery)
- Repairing sun damage
- Smoothing rough skin texture
- Clearing away facial veins, redness, or rosacea
- Firming up lax skin
Popular areas of the body that are safely and effectively treated at our cosmetic and medical dermatology practice include the face, neck, back, and chest.
Skin Resurfacing for a Rejuvenated Appearance
Non-ablative fractionated laser procedures have become very popular with men in recent years because they safely improve skin tone and texture by doing the following:
- Shrinking large pores
- Reducing brown spots and freckles
- Fading the appearance of scars
- Refreshing skin tone and overall appearance
Body Contouring with Liposuction
Liposuction is a popular choice among men to help contour their bodies more precisely while still achieving results that don’t look like the patient has had work done. Common areas for fat reduction include the abdomen, love handles, lower back, neck, and under the chin. However, it is a not a solution for a beer belly.
Men who suffer from gynecomastia, or “man boobs,” can also benefit from liposuction, especially when combined with a radiofrequency skin tightening treatment such as ThermiTight, to achieve a more defined chest.
Non-Surgical Body Contouring with CoolSculpting
The fat-freezing process of CoolSculpting is an excellent non-surgical procedure that is often used differently for men than it is for women. Since men tend to carry fat in more localized areas than women do, CoolSculpting is often a simple procedure and experience for men. For men with gynecomastia due to excess fat and not to a glandular condition, a fat freezing treatment is effective.
Abs and love handles are two other areas that CoolSculpting effectively addresses. A one-hour session can shrink excess fat from these areas for a desirable body contour. Best of all CoolSculpting is a non-invasive method for achieving a more svelte figure without anyone knowing that you have had work done. We often combine it with the Vanquish procedure for a deeper removal of fat to enhance results.
In addition to freezing unwanted fat with CoolSculpting, Cooltone is a newly FDA-approved procedure that defines muscles using electromagnetic muscle stimulation. It can tone, firm, and strengthen the muscles of the abdomen, buttocks, and thighs.
Wrinkle Care For Men
In recent years, more men have shown an interest in reducing their wrinkles, leading to the coinage of the term “Brotox.” As Botox techniques have become more refined, it is now possible to have Botox or a similar neuromodulator injected in a way that provides results that appear completely natural. Many men don’t want to smooth out all of their wrinkles, but instead, want to retain a distinguished look with just a few wrinkles that denote life experience. The key is to look refreshed and youthful yet still natural and masculine.
Botox is also effective for addressing hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, as well as reducing the frequency and intensity of migraine headaches.
The expert dermatologists at Cosmetic Laser Dermatology offer a wide variety of injectable treatments, including both neuromodulators and dermal fillers, that are performed by the doctors themselves in order to ensure the best results. Not only can we soften the appearance of wrinkles, but we can enhance the jawline and chin as well with the use of fillers such as Restylane or Juvederm.
Dermal Facial Fillers
Men are more aware of and more concerned with, loss of facial volume and wrinkle formation in the lower part of the face than ever before. While a modicum of wrinkles and volume loss can demonstrate that desired balance between looking distinguished and youthful, keeping the balance is difficult.
For the lost volume in the temples or cheeks, men are turning to dermal fillers, such as Juvéderm, Restylane, or biostimulatory solutions like Sculptra. For wrinkles, folds, and deep lines around the mouth, nose, and chin, dermal fillers such as Restylane or Juvederm can provide a natural-looking smoothing and plumping effect.
Reversing The Signs Of Sun Damage
Many people, men and women both, do not use sunscreen as often as they should, especially when young. This leads to visible signs of damage on the skin, such as brown spots, uneven tone and texture, premature fine lines and wrinkles, and more. This sun damage can cause a person to look much older and more tired than they really are, which can become a cause for concern among men who have jobs in a competitive workforce or are joining the dating scene. Luckily, there are treatments available that can help to reverse the signs of sun damage, and there are sunscreens available that are formulated specifically for men’s skin.
Laser skin resurfacing treatments, such as Fraxel or intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy, can be a great way to help reduce the appearance of brown spots and improve skin texture. These treatments can even be done on the top of the head for men with bald spots!
Acne Treatments
Acne is the number one skin condition in America, and it strikes men and women equally. Many men live with chronic acne that affects their quality of life and self-esteem. Acne is not just a problem for teenagers, either – many people continue to experience acne into their 30s and even 40s.
At Cosmetic Laser Dermatology, we offer all of the latest cutting-edge acne treatments to help conquer even the most stubborn breakouts. These treatments include photodynamic therapy, blue light, Isolaz, and more. Come in for a consultation and we can help come up with a treatment plan for you.
Treatment for Pearly Penile Papules (PPP)
Pearly penile papules are a benign condition characterized by the formation of clusters of white or flesh-colored bumps around the circumference of the glans (penis tip). Also known as PPP, the condition is not a serious cosmetic concern but they can make a man uncomfortable with his appearance. The papules can be safely and permanently removed using a CO2 laser like the Lumenis UltraPulse Encore. A single treatment is typically all it takes to produce a satisfactory outcome.

Treatment for Vein Conditions
Cosmetic Laser Dermatology is proud to be an industry leader in treating problem veins on the face or legs, thanks to founder Dr. Mitchel Goldman’s documented expertise and pioneering research in vein therapy. Men who wish to reduce varicose veins or smaller spider veins on their face or legs can choose from a variety of laser procedures, some of which Dr. Goldman and his team have helped develop:
- CTEV (Intravascular Laser)
- Nd:YAG Laser Treatment
- Pulsed Dye Lasers (PDL)
- Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
Each laser therapy is safe and effective for consistent and usually permanent erasure of unsightly veins.
Sclerotherapy is another vein treatment option that Dr. Goldman is particularly skilled at administering; it is more commonly used for varicose veins, but it can be effective on smaller facial veins, as well. Dr. Goldman has published numerous textbooks and medical articles on both laser vein treatments and sclerotherapy. He also regularly conducts lectures on treatments for vascular conditions for dermatologists and other skin care professionals.
Help Your Skin – Men’s Skin Care At Home
Men’s skincare has changed in recent years in order to meet the demands of more men showing concern about their skin than previous generations have. For many, gone are the days of low-maintenance skin care – i.e. no more than a daily wash and shave.
Keeping a daily maintenance routine doesn’t have to be overly-complicated. It starts with protecting your skin from the sun by applying SPF 30+ sunscreen. Also, examine your skin once or twice a month for unusual changes.
Here are several other tips that we suggest:
- Wash your face with oil-free soaps
- Wash your face after exercising
- Use moisturizing creams with antioxidants and pigment minimizing agents day and night
- Shave with, not against, hair growth with moisturizing shave cream
