Our weight and body image has an immense effect on how we feel about ourselves. It’s no secret that when a person accumulates more fat, certain body areas may balloon outwards. However, we’re willing to bet that most people don’t fully understand just how our fat cells work, and what their purpose is. At Cosmetic Laser Dermatology, our doctors want you to understand the important differences between good and bad fat, and how you can overcome stubborn fatty areas with liposuction.
Brown Fat VS. White Fat
A common misconception about fat in the body is that there is only one kind. However, recent studies have shown that both brown fat and white fat are found in adults, with both serving very different purposes in our bodies. In short, brown fat (also called baby fat) is known as the ‘good’ fat, while white fat comes with a negative connotation. Both kinds of fat work the same way in the sense that the cells are expanded when weight is gained, and shrink when weight is lost. In almost all people, white fat is much more common than brown fat.
White fat is used in the body for long-term energy storage, but it isn’t too efficient at actually producing helpful energy. This kind of fat serves much less of a purpose than brown fat, in which the fat cells house tons of mitochondria, which act like little energy engines that move throughout our body. As we mentioned earlier, brown fat is known as the good kind of fat because it can actually help protect against obesity and diabetes. According to new research, adults with a lot of brown fat were much slimmer than those with white fat, therefore leading to the belief that brown fat can actually improve metabolism.
