Qwo Overview
This Groundbreaking cellulite treatment researched at Cosmetic Laser Dermatology of San Diego, CA is now approved by the FDA.
Women of all shapes and sizes can have cellulite. In fact, 90 percent of women will probably develop cellulite at some point in their lives and the other 10% think they have it! While it’s not a medical issue, many look for a way to smooth out those lumps and dimples to achieve their ideal look.
The good news is we’ve hit a milestone when it comes to improving the appearance of cellulite, as the FDA has recently approved a new injectable named collagenase clostridium histolyticum-aaes, aka Qwo, developed by Endo International. It is designed specifically for the treatment of moderate to severe cases of cellulite on the buttocks, making Qwo the first FDA-approved injectable cellulite treatment.
Cosmetic Laser Dermatology in San Diego, CA is committed to remaining at the forefront of laser and cosmetic surgery while maintaining the highest quality industry standards. With our own research center, we not only get access to the latest cutting-edge treatments that are not yet available in the market, but our board-certified dermatologists are also able to conduct studies in pursuit of advancing cosmetic treatments to optimize the appearance of your skin. Our very own Mitchel P. Goldman, MD and Sabrina G. Fabi, MD, played key roles in the development of Qwo, which will be available later this year.
“We could not have accomplished [FDA Approval] without the incredible contribution that you [Dr. Goldman] have made to our clinical development program from the very early days at Auxilium of providing thoughts and input, to participating in so many of our trials, training fellow investigators at our Phase 2 Investigator Meeting, and co-authoring on manuscripts, and the list goes on.”

“We are so excited to be launching Qwo® (collagenase clostridium histolyticum-aaes) and could not have come as far as we have today without the remarkable contributions that Dr. Sabrina Fabi and Cosmetic Laser Dermatology have made. From being involved in our clinical trials, to participating in our ongoing advisory boards, Dr. Fabi and her team have worked diligently to help us bring QWO to fruition.”

What to Expect
A primary contributing factor in the formation of cellulite is fibrous septae. The septae make up the fibrous connective tissue that connects the skin to the underlying muscle fascia, and when it tightens irregularly, it draws the skin downward, causing the normal layer of fat beneath to push the skin up. This results in the “dimpling” of the skin.
Qwo targets types 1 and 3 collagen, releasing the fibrous septae enzymatically, which is what can smooth the skin and diminish the appearance of cellulite.
The treatment involves a combination of two natural-occurring enzymes, AUX-I and AUX-II, which is injected into the skin under the dimple and breaks down the collagen build-up that causes cellulite. As it releases the fibrous bands, the tension that pushes the surrounding fat upward is reduced, effectively diminishing the appearance of cellulite.
Qwo is injected into each buttock, up to 12 times each. Our San Diego patients will return twice more for treatments, each 21 days apart.

How Was Qwo Developed?
Founder and Medical Director of Cosmetic Laser Dermatology in San Diego, CA, Dr. Goldman was one of the first people to begin, develop, and promote studies with collagenase. He was actively involved in initiating the project, developing all the FDA approval studies, and participating in this research for the past 10 years. Dr. Fabi, Associate Research Director at Cosmetic Laser Dermatology, was also involved in the clinical trials leading to FDA approval.
Endo International recognizes how Mitchel Goldman, MD played a significant role in actualizing the brand’s key achievement. “We could not have accomplished without the incredible contribution that you (Dr. Goldman) have made to our clinical development program from the very early days at Auxilium of providing thoughts and input, to participating in so many of our trials, training fellow investigators at our Phase 2 Investigator Meeting, and co-authoring on manuscripts, and the list goes on.”

Cellfina is one treatment for cellulite that we offer to achieve this look. Cellfina targets the underlying causes of cellulite. This innovative device automates the subcision procedure which effectively snaps the septae. As a result, the skin springs back to shape and smooths out the cellulite dimples. It is a minimally-invasive procedure that is virtually painless and quick, depending on the number of dimples being treated. On average, treatment will take less than an hour to treat 25 dimples. Cellfina is FDA-approved and has been shown in clinical trials to last for up to a year and even beyond.
A new dual-platform device called RESONIC aims to revolutionize cellulite reduction with the science of sound. By utilizing high-power sound waves, RESONIC provides patients with a completely non-invasive treatment that effectively reduces cellulite in just one session. The RESONIC device’s high-pressure shockwaves can also break up body ink to help remove unwanted tattoos in as few as 3 sessions. We believe that this technology may enhance existing technologies to help treat BOTH cellulite and tattoos.
