Overview

Botox® Cosmetic is known as a safe and effective treatment for wrinkles in the forehead, frown lines, and crow’s feet, but the neuromodulator’s ability to relax muscles can also improve the appearance of a gummy smile. A gummy smile reveals the upper teeth and a portion of the gums – a feature that may make a person uncomfortable with their appearance.

In addition to genetics, other common causes of a gummy smile include:

  • A hyperactive muscle that lifts the upper lip
  • A short, thin upper lip that exposes more of the upper gum
  • Bone structure (excessive growth of upper jaw)
  • Size of the teeth (small teeth will make the gums appear more exposed)
  • Long or enlarged gums

What to Expect

How Does Botox Work for a Gummy Smile?

By injecting Botox Cosmetic or other neuromodulators like Dysport®, Xeomin®, Jeuveau® or Daxxify into the upper lip muscles, these muscles relax and become less active. Since a gummy smile is often the result of strong, overactive upper lip muscles, Botox can minimize the ability of the muscle to lift the upper lip too high, reducing gum exposure when you smile.

The number of units of Botox needed will depend on each patient’s case, but typically, 2-3 units per side of the mouth are needed for a gummy smile treatment.

How Long Does it Take for Gummy Smile Botox to Work?

The effects of Botox, Dysport, Xeomin, Jeuveau, or Daxxify are typically visible within 3 days. Full results are achieved between 10-14 days. During this time, patients notice a more relaxed, natural smile with less gum exposure.

How Long Does Botox for a Gummy Smile Last?

Generally, the effects of Botox/Dysport/Xeomin and Jeuveau last for 3-4 months and Daxxify for 6-9 months. Touch-up treatments are recommended to maintain results, but some find regular treatment sessions “train” the muscles so they can go a bit longer between sessions over time.

Our board-certified dermatologists will customize the best treatment plan for you based on your specific needs and goals.
